Your Aquarium
The first thing you need to do is decide what size of aquarium you would like. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Remember the golden rule of "1 inch of fish per gallon". Your aquarium should have the following accessories:
Filter, Air Pump and Gravel. You can add a heater but it's not necessary. Make sure your aquarium is set up 24 hours before you add your guppies. After purchasing your guppies put them in your aquarium in the bag you brought them home in for 20 min to allow them to adjust to your water temperature.
Water Temperature
The water temperature can very between 74 and 82 degrees F. The preferred temperature is 78 degrees F. The cooler your water is the longer it takes for them to mature the warmer your aquarium is the faster they will mature. It all depends on if you want your guppy to breed, most people will have their aquarium cooler so that they can't breed at a younger age, they can start as early as 3 months old with a warmer aquarium.
Feeding
You should feed your guppies once a day unless you have a 3 or 7 day automatic feeder. You can feed them any brand as long as the container says "for all Tropical Fish" or you can feed them "Guppy Flakes". Only feed your guppy as much as they can consume in 5 min.Overfeeding them can also cause for your aquarium to look cloudy and gets dirty much faster if you are worried that you are overfeeding your guppy look for "fluffs" on the bottom of your aquarium that is a very good sign of overfeeding. Please remember that guppies are pigs so it is easy to over feed them, they only need to eat a meal about the size of their eyes daily. You do not need to feed a pregnant female more food.
Cleaning
Don't be fooled by all the different kinds of cleaners that pet stores sell too many chemicals will kill your guppies. The only cleaners you really need is one that kills chlorine in tap water such as Aquaplus or Jungle Start Right, and another product you can us is Aquarium Salt for fresh water fish. You'll need to change the water weekly, only empty 1 quarter of your aquarium and replace it with fresh treated water. Just follow the directions on which ever chlorine killer you purchased. You will also need a gravel cleaner, you should clean your gravel depending on the size of your aquarium and the amount of guppies you have, usually on a weekly basis. Your filter should be replaced on a monthly basis depending on your aquarium and the amount of guppies.
Breeding Your Guppies (Pregnancy, Labour And Delivery)
Guppies are also known as millionfish because they are easy and quick to breed. Female guppies are pregnant for approximately 28 days. They will also reproduce every month so you would count 28 days after her delivery and you should have more fry's around that time. All you have to do is have males and females, if you want fry's (babies) with specific colors you can choose your male and female and use a 3 in 1 breeding kit. Put them in there together for 2 days and she should be pregnant. Female guppies can store sperm for up to 6 month, so don't be disappointed if you don't get fry's every month. Once your female(s) is pregnant you will notice her getting bigger and her gravid spot changing from brown to black. The gravid spot is the area near her bottom it becomes black because of the fry's eyes coming closer to the birth canal. When your female is due she will swim up and down your aquarium and she may refuse to eat, if you notice her doing so and you want your fry's alive you have 2 choices: first if your aquarium has lot's of plants (live or Plastic), rocks and logs you don't have to worry as the fry's will have lot's of room to hide from the adults so they don't get eaten. Your second option would be to immediately move her to the breeding trap (nursery), When she's done delivering remove mom from the trap and place her back with the other adults, now your fry's will be safe from being eaten. Delivery can take up to 6 hours and guppies can have between 1 and 100 fry's per pregnancy. Some people will say that you can't place your female immediately with the others because the males will chase her and because she just gave birth she will die of exhaustion, but we've always put them back and not one female has died yet.If you prefer to be safe then I would let her stay in the nursery for 2 hours.
How To Care For Fry's
Fry's are starving after birth you can feed them either tropical fish flakes crushed into powder or staple food ("food for fry's). Instead of feeding the fry's once daily try to feed them 3 small meals daily which will equal up to the same if you only feed them once daily. Your fry's will have to stay in the breeding trap/nursery until they are half an inch long usually at about 4 weeks of age depending on your water temperature. You can find new homes for them at about 5 weeks of age as they don't need there mother to care for them you just have to wait for them to grow a little larger, or if you know someone who is starting out and is only getting your newborn guppies they can leave immediately because you don't have to worry about other fish eating them.
